About the Band

George Watson’s College Pipe Band is the school pipe band of George Watson’s College in Edinburgh. The school itself dates back to George Watson’s bequest and opened as George Watson’s Hospital in 1741, later becoming George Watson’s College. The pipe band has long been part of the school’s public identity, with historic school material showing an Officer Training Corps pipe band in earlier Watson’s life.

In the modern era, Watson’s has become one of Scotland’s strongest school pipe band programmes. Under long-serving Pipe Major Iain Simpson, the programme grew from one band and around 50 pupils learning piping into a major youth piping and drumming setup. Simpson retired in 2022 after 22 years teaching pipes at the school.

Recent results have been outstanding. George Watson’s Juvenile Band retained the Juvenile World Championship title at the 2025 World Pipe Band Championships, while the Juvenile drum corps was also crowned World Champion. In 2026, Watson’s was reported as the big winner at the Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships, taking the Juvenile, Novice Juvenile A and Novice Juvenile B events.
