About the Band

Mackenzie Caledonian Pipe Band is a Dundee-based pipe band organisation with roots in the aftermath of the First World War. The original Mackenzie Pipe Band was formed in 1918, partly to give returning servicemen a musical and social outlet after the trauma of the trenches. Local reporting notes that the band attracted men coming home from France and Belgium, offering shared activity, music and companionship at a time when post-war trauma was barely understood.

The current name came from later development, with public historical summaries noting that the Mackenzie Pipe Band amalgamated with the Caledonian band in 1958 to become Mackenzie Caledonian Pipe Band. The band celebrated its centenary in 2018 and has been described as one of the world’s longest-running civilian pipe bands.

Today, Mackenzie Caledonian remains active in Dundee’s piping scene, supporting competition, teaching and youth development. Recent public profiles list the organisation as RSPBA registered, competing in Grade 3A and playing up to Grade 2 at minor contests. In 2024, the band also launched recital activity to support and promote piping in Dundee and the surrounding area.
