About the Band

Altnaveigh Memorial Pipe Band is based in County Down, Northern Ireland, near Newry, and was founded in 1946. The band was established in memory of those who lost their lives in the Altnaveigh tragedy, giving it a strong local commemorative identity from the beginning. Recent Belfast International Tattoo material also notes the band’s County Down base and 1946 foundation.

The band has continued for generations as both a memorial organisation and a working community pipe band, promoting Highland piping, drumming and Ulster-Scots musical traditions. Its registered charitable purposes include preserving pipe and drum music, developing Ulster-Scots cultural traditions, providing tuition, and encouraging people of all ages to develop instrumental skills.

Today, Altnaveigh Memorial Pipe Band remains active in the greater Newry area and across Northern Ireland, with tuition, community performances and cultural activity at the heart of its work. A band with a name that carries weight: remembrance first, pipes and drums still doing the talking nearly eighty years on.
