About the Band

Metro Scottish Pipe Band, also known as Metropolitan Scottish Pipe Band, is based in Waltham, Christchurch, New Zealand. The band was founded in 1952 as the Christchurch Metropolitan Highland Pipe Band, making it one of the long-standing pipe bands in the Canterbury region.

The band has traditionally served both the contest field and the local community, performing at civic events, parades, ANZAC Day commemorations and Christmas events. One notable appearance was at the celebration of New Zealand Prime Minister Norman Kirk’s election in 1972.

Today, Metro Scottish continues as an active Christchurch band with a strong teaching and community focus. It has around 35 members, ranging from young learners to experienced adult players, and currently presents itself as a Grade 3 band bringing a modern New Zealand flavour to Scottish piping and drumming.
