About the Band

Canterbury Caledonian Society Pipe Band is based in Christchurch, New Zealand, and is part of the wider Canterbury Caledonian Society, which was established in 1880 as one of New Zealand’s major Scottish cultural societies. The Society includes pipe bands, Highland and national dancing, Scottish country dancing, archives, and a College of Piping and Drumming.

The pipe band itself was formed in 1902, with its first practice held on 8 September that year after approval from the Canterbury Caledonian Society. It celebrated its centenary in 2002, making it one of New Zealand’s long-standing pipe band institutions.

Over the decades, Canterbury Caledonian developed into a major force in New Zealand pipe banding. The organisation now supports multiple bands, including Grade 1, Grade 3 and Grade 4 groups, giving it both a top competitive edge and a teaching pipeline.

The Grade 1 band has enjoyed sustained national success, including a strong run of New Zealand Championship titles in the 2010s and 2020s. It was listed as New Zealand’s reigning Grade 1 champion ahead of the 2024 championships, and in 2026 won the New Zealand Championship again, taking firsts from all eight judges under Pipe Major Piers Dover.

Today, Canterbury Caledonian Society Pipe Band remains one of New Zealand’s flagship Grade 1 bands: old roots, sharp teeth, and enough Christchurch steel to make the drones behave.
