About the Band

City of Edinburgh Pipes & Drums is a Grade 2 competition pipe band based in Scotland’s capital. Its roots go back to 1947, when Woolmet & Danderhall Colliery Pipe Band was formed in the Midlothian mining village of Danderhall. The band later developed into the City of Edinburgh Pipe Band, carrying that community background into the wider Scottish competition scene.

The band has competed at major championships under the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association and is regarded as the senior pipe band in Edinburgh. In recent years, it has continued in Grade 2 under Pipe Major David Clunie, maintaining a strong competitive presence while also performing at public events and engagements.

Today, City of Edinburgh Pipes & Drums represents both the capital city and its Midlothian mining-band heritage, combining competition, performance and player development within one of Scotland’s most historic pipe band regions.
