About the Band

Bready Ulster-Scots Pipe Band was established in 1929 in Bready, near Strabane in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Local people formed the band using second-hand pipes and drums, and it attended its first Twelfth demonstration in July of that year with Willie Doherty as Pipe Major. The area had earlier musical traditions, including records of a Bready flute band dating back to the 1850s.

The band began competing in 1977 and built a strong record, including 2nd place at the 1979 All-Ireland Championships, Northwest Champion titles in 1981, 1983 and 1984, runners-up placings at the British Championships in 1995 and 1996, and runners-up at the World Championships in 2003. Its drum corps has also had major success, including British titles and an All-Ireland drumming title in 2002.

Originally known as Bready Pipe Band, it was renamed Bready Ulster Scots Pipe Band in 2004. A junior band was formed in 1999 to develop younger players for the senior band. Today, the band remains active from the Sollus Centre in Bready, competing, performing locally, and offering tuition in piping and drumming. A proper long-haul Ulster band, then: founded in 1929, still blowing strong, and clearly not short of stamina.
