About the Band

South Canterbury Highland Pipe Band is based in Timaru, New Zealand, and was formed in 1903, making it one of the oldest pipe bands in the country. It has also been known historically as the City of Timaru Highland Pipe Band or Timaru Highland Pipe Band.

Across more than a century, the band has been closely tied to the South Canterbury community. Its history includes playing for troop trains during the Second World War, while many of its own members served overseas during both world wars.

The band has represented the Timaru district at hundreds of pipe band contests throughout New Zealand and remains active as a local performing and competing organisation. Its centenary history, Discovering a Century of Pipes and Drums over Timaru, was published in 2003, marking 100 years of piping and drumming in the city.

In recent years, South Canterbury has also supported youth development, including combining juvenile players with Celtic Pipe Band of Nelson for competition work.
