About the Band

Manawatu Scottish Pipe Band is based in Palmerston North, New Zealand, and was established in 1925, with its roots linked to the Manawatu Scottish Society. RNZPBA material also notes the organisation can trace origins back to 1923, when it was known as the Manawatu Highland Pipe Band.

The organisation is now one of New Zealand’s largest pipe band setups, with a Grade 1 band, Grade 3 band, youth development band, supporters club and administrative body.

Manawatu has been a major force in New Zealand competition, holding the Grade 1 New Zealand Championship title seven times between 2001 and 2008. In 2002, the band won both Grade 1 titles at the Australian and South Pacific Championships in Brisbane. Since 1997, it has regularly travelled to Scotland for the World Championships, reaching as high as 9th in the world.
