About the Band

City of Rotorua Highland Pipe Band is a New Zealand pipe band based in Rotorua, in the Bay of Plenty. The Royal New Zealand Pipe Bands’ Association records the band as being formed in 1935 by members of the local Caledonian Society, including future Pipe Major Joe Campbell and his brother Bob Campbell. The band went into recess during the Second World War but re-formed afterwards and has served the Rotorua community ever since.

The band wears Campbell tartan, honouring the Campbell brothers who were part of its founding story. It performs regularly at local community events, including ANZAC Day and Christmas parade appearances, while also competing around New Zealand and attending the National Championships.

Competitively, Rotorua has enjoyed strong lower-grade success. RNZPBA championship records list City of Rotorua HPB as Grade 4B New Zealand Champion in both 2019 and 2020.
