About the Band
Canterbury Caledonian Society’s Pipe Band is a Christchurch, New Zealand pipe band organisation linked to the Canterbury Caledonian Society, which was established in 1880. The pipe band itself was formed in 1902, holding its first practice on 8 September 1902 after gaining approval from the Society.
The organisation is one of New Zealand’s major pipe band institutions, with several bands under its umbrella, including Grade 1, Grade 3 and Grade 4 bands, plus youth/development activity through its College of Piping & Drumming.
Its Grade 1 band has been one of New Zealand’s strongest modern competitors, winning multiple national titles and defending the New Zealand & South Pacific Championship in 2023. In 2026, Canterbury Caledonian Society again won the New Zealand Championship, taking firsts from all eight judges.
The band also endured a major setback after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, when its 88-year-old hall was destroyed, along with drums belonging to the Grade 1 and Grade 3 bands. Despite that, it continued competing internationally, including at the 2011 World Pipe Band Championships.
