Auckland & District Pipe Band is one of New Zealand’s leading Grade 1 pipe bands, based in Auckland and drawing members from across the city, its outer suburbs, and other parts of New Zealand. Known affectionately as “A&D”, the band has been described by the Royal New Zealand Pipe Bands’ Association as the premier Grade 1 pipe band in the Northern Region for more than fifty years.

The band has a strong record at national level, with multiple New Zealand Grade 1 championship wins and runner-up placings across several decades. Publicly listed honours include New Zealand Grade 1 titles in years such as 1950, 1969, 1971, 1972, 1981, 1983, 1991, 1993, 1995, 2000, 2009 and 2010, although some online summary sources should be treated with a wee pinch of spreadsheet salt unless cross-checked against official records.

Auckland & District has also competed internationally, including at the World Pipe Band Championships, and remains active in New Zealand’s Grade 1 scene. The band wears a version of Menzies tartan, noted by the Scottish Register of Tartans as having been adopted by Auckland and District Pipe Band.

Today, A&D continues as both a competition band and a teaching/performance organisation, keeping top-level pipe band music alive in Auckland. A serious outfit then: not just “some pipes near the harbour”, but a proper Kiwi Grade 1 engine room with drones, discipline, and enough championship history to make the trophy cabinet groan.
