About the Band

Upper Crossgare Pipe Band is based in the Upper Crossgare townland near Dromara, County Down, Northern Ireland. Its origins go back to 1935, when members of the local flute band decided to change direction and form a pipe band. With Joseph Harte and Samuel Smyth able to play pipes, practice began in August 1935, and by 1936 the band was active with sixteen pipers.

The band was interrupted by the Second World War, with parades and public functions restricted, but revived after 1945 under Pipe Major William Chambers. Over the decades, Upper Crossgare developed into a respected competitive band, strongly associated with County Down’s pipe band tradition. The band wears McLean of Duart tartan and has long been noted for strong drumming.

Its drum corps has achieved notable success, including British Championship honours, Ulster and All-Ireland titles, and, in 2002, the Grade 2 World Championship drum corps title alongside third place overall and best bass section. More recently, Upper Crossgare, now competing from Dromara, was honoured by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council after its drum corps won the Grade 4A World Champion Drum Corps title at the 2024 World Pipe Band Championships, where the band also placed fourth overall.
