About the Band

Down Pipes and Drums is a County Down-based competition pipe band from Northern Ireland, closely linked with Down Academy Pipes and Drums. The wider Down Academy organisation was founded in September 2018 as a cross-community Grade 4B band based at Spa, Ballynahinch, with a strong focus on teaching and developing young pipers and drummers.

Down Pipes and Drums appears to have grown from that same development pathway as the senior band, giving advancing players somewhere to continue competing once they move beyond the juvenile/learner setup. Public listings from the RSPBA Northern Ireland Branch show Down Pipes & Drums competing in Grade 3B, based in Co. Down, wearing County Down tartan, with William Wallace listed as Pipe Major and Leanne Fitzsimmons as secretary. The same branch listing also shows Down Academy separately in Grade 4B, confirming the two-band structure.

Recent public references show Down Pipes and Drums active on the Northern Ireland contest circuit, including appearances at events such as the Co. Fermanagh Championships and Mid Ulster quartets.

Although a detailed standalone history for Down Pipes and Drums is not widely published, the available record points to a young, fast-developing band built from Down Academy’s teaching programme.
