About the Band

Oban Pipe Band is a long-established Argyll band from Oban on Scotland’s west coast. Its early history is linked to the Lawrie family, with sources crediting brothers Angus and Kenneth Lawrie as key founders. Pipe Major Angus Lawrie, known as “Old Toastie,” became a central figure in the band’s story, and the band is generally believed to date from the early 1920s, with some accounts suggesting it reformed after the First World War in 1922.

The band has long been part of Oban’s musical and civic life, closely associated with the town’s Highland games culture and the wider piping tradition of Argyll. Oban itself is an important piping centre, best known for the Argyllshire Gathering, one of Scotland’s great Highland games events dating back to 1871.

In modern competition, Oban Pipe Band has continued to build its reputation. A major recent success came when the band won its grade at the World Pipe Band Championships, leading to promotion from Grade 3A to Grade 2.
