About the Band

Oban High School Pipe Band was formed in 2005 by Pipe Major Angus MacColl, working with the Netherlorn Piping Society. The aim was to promote piping and drumming among young people in North Argyll and to serve Oban and Lorn’s strong musical community. Since then, the band has grown to more than 40 members, all under 18, becoming a full competing juvenile pipe band.

The band quickly became one of Scotland’s notable school pipe band programmes. Its major breakthrough came in 2010, when Oban High School won the World Pipe Band Championships in Novice Juvenile and was also named Champion of Champions for the season.

As well as competing, the band plays an important local role, appearing at school and community events and helping lead the pipe band presence at the Argyllshire Gathering and Oban Highland Games.

In recent years, Oban High School Pipe Band has continued to perform strongly, including high placings in the juvenile grades and international appearances such as New York Tartan Week. In 2026, the band marked its 20th anniversary with concerts in Oban.
