About the Band

North Lanarkshire Schools Pipe Band is part of North Lanarkshire Council’s Instrumental Music Service, drawing young pipers and drummers from schools across the area. The band was established in the mid-2000s, with public listings giving 2005, while the Scots Trad Music Awards profile notes the project was set up around 2004 to expand piping and drumming opportunities for pupils.

The band wears the Spirit of North Lanarkshire tartan and has become one of Scotland’s strongest schools pipe band programmes. North Lanarkshire’s schools piping and drumming programme has grown to around 400 pupils, giving the band a broad youth-development base rather than being just a contest outfit.

Competitively, North Lanarkshire Schools has built an excellent record, including Scottish, British and European titles, RSPBA Champion of Champions in 2018, and World Championship wins in 2016 and 2019. In 2019 the Novice Juvenile A band won the World title at Glasgow Green, also taking the drumming prize and Champion of Champions award.

The band has also represented North Lanarkshire internationally, including at the Tartan Day celebrations in New York in 2019. Today it continues to rehearse through the schools music service, with recent public profiles listing activity at Coatbridge High School.
