About the Band

New Ross & District Pipe Band is based in New Ross, County Wexford, Ireland. The band was founded in 1974, when Pat O’Gorman set out to establish a new pipe band in the town. Early support came from the late Frank Saunders Sr. of Dublin as drumming instructor, while the first Pipe Major was Brian MacMahon, a young piper from Bray, County Wicklow.

Brian MacMahon became central to the band’s development, teaching and mentoring many of its pipers over the years. In 2007, Nigel O’Neill, a former pupil and long-serving member, took over as Pipe Major.

The band has represented New Ross and Ireland internationally, with appearances in countries including France, the United States, Wales, England, Scotland, Spain, Italy and Lithuania. It also became a strong contest band, winning World titles in Grade 4A and Grade 3B in the years before its 40th anniversary.

In 2014, New Ross marked a major milestone when the town hosted the All-Ireland Pipe Band Championships during the band’s 40th anniversary year.
