About the Band

McAlpines North Canterbury Pipe Band is based in Rangiora, North Canterbury, New Zealand, and was formed in 1928. The Royal New Zealand Pipe Bands’ Association describes it as having an almost century-long, uninterrupted involvement in the North Canterbury community. The band is also notable for having had the same sponsor, McAlpines, for decades, and it wears McAlpines tartan in recognition of that long-standing support.

The band has deep roots in local service. It plays at A&P shows, Christmas parades, bridge openings, rest homes and community gatherings around Rangiora and North Canterbury. RNZPBA sums up the band’s local presence neatly: if there is a gathering, there is a fair chance McAlpines North Canterbury will be there.

Its history has also been recorded in print: I Propose... A Jubilee History of the McAlpines North Canterbury Pipe Band (Inc) 1928–2003, published by the band in 2003. Local coverage in 2023 also noted that the band was formed in 1928 and was approaching its 100th anniversary.
