About the Band
Lewis Turrell Memorial Trust Juvenile Pipe Band is a youth pipe band from Hamilton, New Zealand, connected with the wider Hamilton Caledonian pipe band organisation. It was formed by the Lewis Turrell Memorial Trust in memory of Lewis Turrell, one of New Zealand’s most respected pipers, teachers and adjudicators. Turrell was the first non-Scottish piper to win a Highland Society of London Gold Medal, taking the Northern Meeting Gold Medal in 1958.
The band first competed at the 2018 Rotorua Nationals and quickly became a major part of New Zealand’s youth pipe band scene. The Royal New Zealand Pipe Bands’ Association notes that the band has had multiple members in the National Youth Pipe Band of New Zealand, showing the strength of its teaching and player development.
The Trust later expanded to run two juvenile bands, with the B band giving newer pipers and drummers their first experience in the competition circle. RNZPBA material also places the Lewis Turrell Memorial Trust bands within Hamilton Caledonian’s wider structure, alongside its senior and development bands.
