About the Band

Letterkenny & District Pipe Band is a cross-community pipe band based in Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland. The band was formed in 2000 by Mervyn Elvin and has used Conwal Parish Church Hall as a base for practice and tuition. From the start, its role has been both musical and developmental, teaching young people in the area to play pipes and drums.

The band’s biggest early achievement came in 2009, when it was crowned World Champion in Grade 4A. After that high point, the usual pipe band enemies arrived: emigration, college, work and family commitments, which reduced numbers and forced a rebuild. In 2014, Mervyn Elvin handed the Pipe Major role to Lee Hegarty, while continuing as a tutor and valued member.

Letterkenny later rebuilt strongly. In 2023, the band qualified for the World Pipe Band Championships for the first time in ten years and placed third in Grade 4B at Glasgow Green, competing against a large international field.
