About the Band

Isle of Arran Music School Pipe Band is a youth pipe band project based on the Isle of Arran, Scotland, and is part of the wider Isle of Arran Music School. The project grew from a push to bring piping and drumming tuition into island schools, creating a funded programme so pupils across Arran could learn chanter, pipes and drums without opportunity depending on postcode or family budget. The Arran Pipe Band site quotes music teacher James O’Neil describing the programme as reaching around one fifth of all island school pupils at its early stage.

The music school is a registered charity focused on musical education for young people on Arran, and by 2023 it was supporting two school pipe bands with up to 90 pupils involved in pipes and drums workshops. Funding support has included multi-year help from the Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust, with listed funding across 2017–2027 for pipes and drums tuition and development.

The band performs locally and further afield, including Arran events, farmers’ shows, Piping Live activity in Glasgow, and public showcases. It also has big ambitions: fundraising material says the band has been invited to travel to New York in 2027 for the Tartan Day Parade.
