About the Band

Edmonton & District Pipe Band is based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Public information under that exact name is a wee bit thin, because the band later became closely associated with the revived Viscount Park Pipe Band name. In 2014, pipes|drums reported that Edmonton & District had undergone a major transformation and adopted the Viscount Park identity, paying tribute to an earlier Edmonton band of the same name.

The original Viscount Park Pipe Band was founded in 1971 and was active through the 1970s under figures including Iain MacCrimmon. When Edmonton & District revived the name, former Viscount Park members attended the launch ceilidh, symbolically handing over a bass drum head from the original band’s final year, 1978.

Edmonton has a strong piping ecosystem beyond this band, including the Edmonton Youth Pipe Band, whose roots go back to 1929 as the Edmonton Boys’ Pipe Band. Many young players from that scene have gone on into senior bands across the city and province, helping sustain Edmonton’s competition culture.

More recent public footage shows Edmonton & District Pipe Band competing internationally, including in Grade 4A at the 2024 European Pipe Band Championships, led by Pipe Major Morgan Miller.
