About the Band

Ashburton County Scottish Society Pipe Band appears to be part of the wider Ashburton pipe band tradition in Mid Canterbury, New Zealand. The present-day Ashburton Pipe Band traces its roots to 1905, and New Zealand piping history records Ashburton Pipe Band as one of only three bands at the first Dominion Pipe Band Contest, held during the Christchurch International Exhibition of 1906–07.

Historic references show the Ashburton County Scottish Society Pipe Band name in use by 1915, likely connected to the early Ashburton band movement and the Scottish community in the district. One local history note describes an Ashburton pipe band formed in 1901, later becoming the Ashburton Citizens’ Defence Corps band in 1915, though the exact naming and continuity between these early groups is not fully clear from public sources.

Today’s Ashburton Pipe Band continues the town’s piping legacy as a local Mid Canterbury band, welcoming pipers, drummers and learners.
