About the Band

Calgary Highlanders Pipe Band is the regimental pipe band of The Calgary Highlanders, a Canadian Army Reserve infantry regiment based in Calgary, Alberta. The regiment’s first pipe band was recruited in the early 1920s, drawing on local Calgary pipers, including players from the Calgary Scottish Pipe Band. In 1923, Honorary Colonel R. B. Bennett donated uniforms to help establish the band.

During the Second World War, the regiment had pipe bands attached to its battalions. Members of the 1st Battalion Pipe Band served as trained soldiers, and in Normandy the pipers famously played the battalion into its first combat action at Hill 67.

After the war, the band continued supporting regimental duties, parades, recruiting and public events. It declined in the late 1960s but was officially reactivated in 1975 under Pipe Major Don Maxwell, who rebuilt it into a successful competition band. Today, Calgary Highlanders Pipe Band continues to represent the regiment and Calgary through ceremonial performance, community events and competition.
