About the Band

Irish Pipers Band of San Francisco was formed in 1932 by Irish immigrants who wanted to preserve the piping traditions of Ireland in the Bay Area. It is described as the oldest continuously active Irish pipe band west of the Mississippi River and was a charter member of the Pacific Coast Pipe Band Association.

The band has played at many notable San Francisco events, including the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge, the founding charter meeting of the United Nations, and the groundbreaking ceremony for the United Irish Cultural Center. It has also performed with Gene Kelly on national television and later appeared on stage with The Chieftains.

The Irish Pipers have been part of the San Francisco St Patrick’s Day Parade and Irish flag-raising ceremony since the band was founded. Since 2003, the band has competed regularly, winning WUSPBA Grade 3 Championship titles in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Today, it continues to perform, compete and promote Irish piping and drumming across the San Francisco Bay Area.
