About the Band

The Transvaal Scottish Pipes & Drums, often known as “The Jocks”, is one of South Africa’s best-known military pipe bands. It traces its origins to 1902, after the Second Anglo-Boer War, when the Transvaal Scottish Regiment was formed from volunteers in the Transvaal province. The pipe band became part of that regimental identity, carrying Scottish military piping traditions into South African service.

The band has a long service history, linked with the regiment through both World Wars and later South African military life. Today it is associated with the reserve forces and continues to represent the regiment at military, ceremonial, public, and competition events.

Competitively, Transvaal Scottish has been one of the leading bands in the South African pipe band scene. It won the South African Pipe Band Championship and the PBASA Champion of Champions title in 2006, and repeated major national success in later seasons.

The band has also appeared internationally, including performances connected with major military tattoos. Its current public profile describes it as a Johannesburg-based pipe band active in competitions, performances, and events.

With over a century of history, The Jocks remain a major South African pipe band institution: part regiment, part competition machine, and part Highland thunder exported to the veld.
