About the Band

Glengarry Pipe Band was formed in early 1961 under Pipe Major Gordon Kippen in Maxville, Ontario. Its roots go back to the Clan MacLeod Society of Glengarry, which had earlier funded lessons for young pipers and later supported drummer instruction so a local duty band could play at the Glengarry Highland Games. The official name “The Glengarry Pipe Band” was adopted, with the band also known as The Glengarry Highlanders.

The band quickly became part of the musical fabric of Glengarry County. John Jamieson served as its first secretary, and by the late 1960s the organisation was looking beyond performance alone, developing piping and drumming instruction to keep a steady supply of young players coming through. In 1969, the band toured Scotland for three weeks, competed at the Cowal Games, and placed in the top ten in its grade.

Today, Glengarry Pipe Band remains closely linked with Maxville and the Glengarry Highland Games, one of North America’s major Highland gatherings. It continues to represent the area’s strong Scottish-Canadian tradition through competition, teaching and community performance.
