About the Band

Cape Town Highlanders Drums & Pipes is based in Cape Town, South Africa, and is described as South Africa’s oldest pipe band, dating back to 1889. The band is attached to the Cape Town Highlanders regiment and is based at the Castle of Good Hope.

Its unusual name, Drums & Pipes rather than the more common Pipes & Drums, reflects its historic link to the Gordon Highlanders tradition, where the drum corps preceded the addition of pipers. The band continues to wear the Gordon tartan and maintains strong regimental links.

Over the years, the band has built a major international profile, performing at events including the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Basel Tattoo, Berlin Military Tattoo and other military music festivals. It also competes in South Africa’s pipe band circuit and is currently associated with Grade 3 competition.

Today, Cape Town Highlanders Drums & Pipes continues to represent Cape Town through military tradition, competition, public performance and international appearances.
