About the Band

St Andrew’s College SA Pipe Band is based at St Andrew’s College in Makhanda, formerly Grahamstown, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. The school was founded in 1855, and its pipe band was established in 1934, making it one of South Africa’s long-standing school pipe bands.

The band is closely linked to the College’s cadet and ceremonial traditions, leading parades and performing at school occasions, remembrance events and wider community functions. It is one of a small number of registered school pipe bands in South Africa, helping maintain piping and drumming within the country’s school music scene.

St Andrew’s College Pipe Band has also competed in South Africa and overseas, including travel to Scotland for pipe band competition. Today, it continues to develop young pipers and drummers while representing the College’s heritage, discipline and musical tradition.
