About the Band
Essex Caledonian Pipe Band is a competing pipe band based in Chelmsford, Essex. It was formed in the mid-1990s after changes involving the Harwich, Brentwood and Red Hackle pipe bands, with Essex Caledonian becoming established in 1996. The band first competed in July that year under Pipe Major Jock Stobbs and Drum Sergeant Vic Saunders.
After Jock Stobbs’ death in 1997, Wally Wallace became Pipe Major and led the band through a period of growth and competition success. During his time in charge, Essex Caledonian progressed into Grade 3, competed at major championships including Cowal, the Europeans and the British Championships, and won best drum corps at the All-England Championships in Ashbourne.
Today, the band continues as an active Grade 4B competition and performance band, taking part in contests, local events, weddings, carnivals and public engagements while developing players of different ages and abilities.
