About the Band
St Andrew’s College Pipes & Drums is based at St Andrew’s College in Christchurch, New Zealand. The pipe band was established in 1919 after pupils asked the school’s first Rector, Sydney Dickinson, for permission to form a band. Pipe Major James Erskine of the Canterbury Caledonian Society Pipe Band became the first piping tutor, teaching the original group of 16 boys.
The band has remained an important part of school life for more than a century, performing at college events, parades, civic occasions and pipe band competitions. In 2019, former and current members marked 100 years since the band’s formation, recognising its place in the history and identity of the school.
Today, St Andrew’s College Pipes & Drums continues to teach and develop young pipers and drummers, supporting performance, competition and the wider Scottish musical tradition in Canterbury.
