About the Band

The Inveraray & District Pipe Band (IDPB), based in Argyll, Scotland, is one of the fastest‑rising success stories in pipe band history. It was officially formed in 2005 by renowned solo piper Stuart Liddell, following a grassroots teaching project that began in local schools in 2003 to revive piping in the area.

Starting with a small group of youngsters—some with borrowed drums and mismatched uniforms—the band entered competition in the Novice Juvenile grade at Cowal in 2005. What followed was a meteoric rise: by 2007 they had won four of five major championships, including the Worlds, in Novice Juvenile; by 2008 they repeated the feat in Juvenile; and in 2009 they achieved a clean sweep of all five major titles in Grade 2.

This unprecedented progression saw the band promoted to Grade 1 in 2010, just five years after formation. Within a few seasons they were consistently placing at major championships, winning their first Grade 1 major (the European Championship) in 2014 and quickly establishing themselves among the elite.

Their breakthrough came in 2017, when Inveraray won their first World Pipe Band Championship, also securing Champion of Champions that season. They added further World titles in 2019, 2024, and 2025, confirming their status as a dominant modern force.

Known for a highly musical, contemporary style and technical precision—driven by the partnership of Stuart Liddell and leading drummer Steven McWhirter—the band has influenced the modern sound of pipe band competition while maintaining strong local roots.
