About the Band
Hamilton Caledonian Development Pipe Band is part of the wider Hamilton Caledonian Society Pipe Band organisation in Hamilton, New Zealand. The parent organisation traces its roots to 1925, when it was formed as the South Auckland Caledonian Society, later becoming the Hamilton Caledonian Society. It has long promoted Scottish music and culture in the Waikato through piping, drumming, concerts, community events and competition.
The development band sits within a larger Hamilton Caledonian structure rather than standing as a separate old society band. RNZPBA material notes that Hamilton Caledonian runs multiple bands under one organisation, with its senior band recently promoted back to Grade 3 after winning Grade 4A at the 2024 New Zealand Nationals. The organisation also includes youth and development activity, including the Lewis Turrell Memorial Trust Juvenile Pipe Band.
Hamilton Caledonian has a strong competition record, including historic success in New Zealand’s top grades, Grade 2 championship wins in 2005 and 2006, and a more recent Grade 3 New Zealand Championship title in 2025.
