About the Band

Cascadia Pipe Band is a Seattle-area pipe band from Washington State, USA, based around Edmonds/Seattle and drawing players from across the Pacific Northwest. It began in September 2021, when Patrick Downing, Aaron Stone, Matt Maier and Kyle Gaul started meeting weekly near Shorecrest High School with the aim of building a new competitive pipe band. That casual park-bench start quickly became a Grade 3 contest band for the 2022 season.

The band moved fast. After a successful first season on the British Columbia Pipers’ Association circuit, Cascadia was promoted to Grade 2 in 2023, becoming Washington State’s highest-level competitive pipe band and its only Grade 2 band. It has since competed across Washington, British Columbia, California and Illinois, winning BCPA Grade 2 Grand Aggregate honours in each season since promotion.

In 2023, Cascadia became a 501(c)(3) non-profit and began hosting Washington Solo Gatherings for local pipers and drummers. In 2024, it added a Grade 4 development band, giving newer players a structured route into competition.

A major milestone came in 2025, when Cascadia made its first trip to the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow and tied for 6th place in Grade 2. The band plans to return in 2026.
