About the Band

Buchan Peterson Pipe Band is based in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, and was formed in 1970. The band was initially a non-competing outfit, led by Pipe Major George Thom, before developing into a serious contesting band representing Buchan and the wider north-east of Scotland.

Over time, the band drew players from across the region, including Aberdeen, Fraserburgh, Inverurie, Huntly, Keith, Elgin, Forres and Peterhead, known locally as the Blue Toon. Its rise made it one of the most prominent bands north of Perth.

A major milestone came in 2016, when Buchan Peterson earned promotion to Grade 1 for the 2017 season, joining the top tier of world pipe band competition. The band made its Grade 1 major championship debut at the 2017 British Pipe Band Championships in Paisley, under Pipe Major Scott Oliphant.

In later years, the band continued to compete strongly in the North of Scotland scene and at major championships. It has also fielded a development band, helping sustain the player pipeline rather than relying on the “find a piper behind the couch” strategy.

More recently, Buchan Peterson has competed under Pipe Major Peter Morrice, with appearances in Grade 1 and Grade 2 contests. In 2025, the band achieved a standout result by finishing 2nd in Grade 2 at the World Pipe Band Championships, a major statement for the Peterhead-based organisation.

Today, Buchan Peterson remains one of the north-east’s best-known pipe bands: Peterhead roots, big-stage ambition, and enough competitive grit to sandblast a granite dyke.
