About the Band
Auckland Police Pipe Band is a Grade 3 competition band based in Northcote, Auckland, New Zealand. It was formally created on 20 June 1945, when Constable Fred McKenzie chaired the meeting that established the Auckland Police Highland Pipe Band. After three years of recruiting tutors, training members and acquiring uniforms, the band made its first public parade on 29 August 1948, led by Drum Major Bob Walton, marching from East Street down Symonds Street to the Central Police Station.
The band was originally made up of serving police officers, but later opened membership to non-police players. Today it includes constabulary staff, police employees and civilian musicians, while continuing to represent both Auckland and New Zealand Police at community and ceremonial events.
Auckland Police Pipe Band has appeared at pay parades, medal ceremonies, police funerals, station openings, open days and wider civic events. It is also active on the competition circuit, with recent public profiles describing it as a Grade 3 band serving Auckland’s communities and the New Zealand Police.
