About the Band
Raffrey Pipe Band is a County Down pipe band from Northern Ireland, associated with the Raffrey area near Crossgar/Killyleagh. The band is best remembered in pipe band history through its link with Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band. Around 1970, Raffrey and Field Marshal Montgomery amalgamated for competition purposes under the name Freymont, competing in Grade 3 under Pipe Major Sandy Cummings. That period was significant because it connected several players and teachers who later became important in Northern Ireland’s pipe band scene. Richard Parkes, who would go on to become one of the most successful pipe majors in history with Field Marshal Montgomery, learned in Raffrey Pipe Band as a youngster under Sandy Cummings, with help from John Garrett.
Although Raffrey does not have the same public record of major championship success as the elite Grade 1 bands, it remains part of the local piping tradition in County Down, appearing at parades and community events. The band’s story is one of those quieter but important threads in Ulster piping: a local band that helped develop players, supported its community, and became part of the wider story that eventually fed into one of the most decorated pipe bands in the world.
