About the Band

Western Australia Police Pipe Band, commonly known as WAPOL, was formed in 1966 in Perth, Western Australia, following an earlier WA Police brass band tradition that had existed from 1902 to 1925. The pipe band became closely associated with the Western Australia Police, performing at police ceremonies, public events and competitions. It wears the Napier tartan.

The band became one of Australia’s strongest competition bands. Its major breakthrough came in 1998, when it won Grade 2 at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow against a large international field, earning promotion to Grade 1 soon after. It later qualified for the Grade 1 World Championship final in 2004, placing 11th overall.

WAPOL has also been a dominant force in Australian competition, winning national Grade 1 titles including the 2012 Australian Championship. In 2004, civilian players were allowed to join alongside police members, broadening the band’s playing strength. Today, Western Australia Police Pipe Band remains one of Australia’s premier pipe bands: police heritage, Grade 1 bite, and enough Perth horsepower to make the chanters sweat.
