About the Band

Coastal Scottish Pipe Band, often known as Coastals, is based in Perth, Western Australia and traces its history back to 1898, making it one of the oldest pipe bands in Australia. It was originally formed by expatriate Scottish workers at the old Fremantle Railway Workshops and was first known as The Gay Gordons, adopting the Gordon tartan in its early years.

By the early 1900s it was being referred to as Coastal Scottish Pipe Band, although the name Fremantle Gordon Pipe Band also continued to appear. The band’s first recorded competition was at the WACA Ground in 1929, during celebrations linked to Western Australia’s centenary. After difficult years during the Depression and wartime period, Coastals rebuilt strongly after the Second World War and performed at major events, including Queen Elizabeth II’s 1954 visit to Western Australia.

In 1975, the band became City of South Perth Pipe Band and adopted the Ancient MacLaine of Lochbuie tartan. In 2001, it returned to the name Coastal Scottish Pipe Band WA. Today, Coastals remains active in performance, tuition and competition, with bands in multiple grades. A proper old stager: railway roots, WA grit, and enough history to make the drones creak.
