About the Band

Ballarat Grammar Pipe Band was established in 2016 at Ballarat Grammar in Victoria, Australia. It is one of Australia’s newer pipe bands and is based at one of the relatively small number of Australian schools offering bagpipes and Highland drumming as extra-curricular activities. The band includes students from Year 4 through to Year 12.

The band first competed at Daylesford in 2016, completing its first season in school uniform. In 2017, the late David Haymes became the band’s benefactor and helped kit the players out in Modern Holyrood tartan, giving the group a stronger visual identity on the contest field.

A major milestone came in 2022, when Ballarat Grammar attended its first Australian Pipe Band Championships in New South Wales, placing 2nd in Grade 4B and winning the Drumming Championship. The band now performs throughout the school calendar and wider Ballarat community, while continuing to develop its contest ambitions.
