About the Band
Louisville Pipe Band was formed in the mid-1970s and has become one of Kentucky’s leading piping and drumming organisations. Its roots grew from organised piping activity in the Louisville area, including school band programmes at Jeffersontown High School and Floyd Central High School, along with the Kosair Shriners bagpipe unit. Early organisers included Robert Caudill, Skip Cleavinger, David James and Rob Modys, with rehearsals beginning at St Andrew’s Episcopal Church.
The band built a strong regional presence through performances at civic events, Highland games and cultural occasions. In 2000, the Kentucky General Assembly designated Louisville Pipe Band as the official Pipe Band of Kentucky for its appearance at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow. The same resolution noted the band’s public role at events including the Kentucky Derby Parade, Shakespeare in the Park, Kentucky Scottish Weekend and the Glasgow Highland Games.
Today, Louisville Pipe Band continues to represent Kentucky’s Scottish musical tradition through performance, competition and teaching. A proper bluegrass skirl machine: pipes, drums, Henderson tartan and enough civic mileage to frighten a tour bus.
