About the Band
The Watsonia RSL Pipes & Drums is based in Watsonia, Victoria, Australia, and was formed in July 1991 by a group of experienced players. Its own history records that the first meeting took place in a room under Ian Gray’s house, which is about as pipe-band-authentic as it gets: no boardroom, just reeds, plans, and probably a kettle working overtime.
The band quickly became one of the more successful Victorian pipe bands through the 1990s and 2000s, building a strong reputation in local competition. After a long break from contesting, Watsonia returned to the competition circle in 2016 and rebuilt its presence on the Australian scene.
Recent results include winning the Grade 4B Victorian Championship in 2022 and taking 1st place in Grade 4B at the Ballarat Grammar contest. The band remains active as both a community and competition band, with regular practices at the Heidelberg Repatriation Centre and ongoing public performances linked to the Watsonia RSL community.
