About the Band

Gemert Fire Brigade Pipes & Drums is based in Gemert, in the Netherlands. The band grew out of the local volunteer fire brigade and was inspired by the funeral services for New York firefighters killed in the 11 September 2001 attacks, where pipe bands played a prominent role. That example led former members of the Gemert volunteer fire service to form their own pipe band.

The band was officially founded on 7 January 2009 and rehearses at the Gemert fire station. It plays Great Highland bagpipes with Scottish-style drums, wearing a fire brigade uniform with a kilt. Its tartan uses red and yellow references to the fire service and Gemert, while also reflecting the influence of Scottish liberators who introduced pipe music to the area in 1944.

Today, Gemert Fire Brigade Pipes & Drums performs at memorials, public events and cultural occasions, while also offering its own training programme. It is not primarily an active competition band, but remains a distinctive Dutch pipe band with strong fire service and remembrance roots.
