About the Band
The Citadel Pipe Band forms part of The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes at The Citadel military college in Charleston, South Carolina. The college’s Regimental Band dates back to 1909, while the pipe band element was added in 1955, when the sound of bagpipes first became part of Citadel musical life. The pipes were introduced during the presidency of General Mark W. Clark, and the unit has since become one of the college’s most recognisable traditions.
The Pipe Band is made up of cadet pipers and drummers and performs at dress parades, ceremonies, public events and Highland games. It has competed in Grades IV and V across the United States and has long been a distinctive part of the wider Regimental Band and Pipes.
Internationally, The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes is especially known for appearances at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, first performing there in 1991 as the first military college band selected for the event. It returned in 2010, 2015 and 2024, giving the band a rare place in American piping and military music history.
