About the Band
Carnegie Mellon University Pipes & Drums is based at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The university has a unique place in piping history, becoming the first institution in the world to offer an academic degree programme in bagpipe music, established by Jimmy McIntosh in the early 1990s.
The pipe band itself is made up entirely of current students and alumni, and is led by Andrew Carlisle, who also oversees the bagpipe major in CMU’s School of Music. The band performs at official university events and has developed a strong competition profile in the United States.
In recent years, Carnegie Mellon has become one of America’s leading university pipe bands, winning the American Pipe Band Championships in 2019 and later travelling to Scotland to compete at events including the European Pipe Band Championships and the World Pipe Band Championships.
