About the Band

Charleston Pipe Band was founded in 1995 in Charleston, South Carolina, originally as the Charleston Police Pipes and Drums. It was created by Charleston Police Chief Reuben Greenberg, with internationally known piper Sandy Jones serving as the band’s first Pipe Major. The band began with a strong public-service identity, supporting the Charleston Police Department, civic occasions and community events.

Over time, the band expanded beyond its police roots and became an independent non-profit organisation, while still maintaining links to public safety and ceremonial service. It has performed across much of the eastern United States and Canada at parades, festivals, funerals, Highland games and public events.

Competitively, Charleston Pipe Band has achieved success at multiple levels of traditional Scottish pipe band competition, including a strong 2016 season when it was recognised as Southern Champion and Eastern United States grade-level champion. Today, it continues to promote Highland piping and drumming through performance, competition and teaching in the Charleston area.
