About the Band

City of Dunedin Pipe Band is based in Dunedin, New Zealand, and was formed in 1898. It is recognised as the second-oldest pipe band in the Southern Hemisphere, drawing members from Dunedin and the wider Otago region.

The band has played an important role in local musical life for more than a century, performing at civic events, university and polytechnic graduation parades, community occasions and sporting events, including Otago Highlanders rugby matches. It wears the Gordon tartan and has been associated with notable players and leaders, including Brian Switalla and Geoff Hallberg.

Competitively, City of Dunedin has achieved major success in New Zealand, winning the Grade 2 national title in 2003, 2007 and 2008 before being promoted to Grade 1. It has also supported development bands, including Grade 4 and juvenile groups. Today, the band continues to represent Dunedin through performance, teaching and competition within the Royal New Zealand Pipe Bands’ Association.
