About the Band

The Scots College Pipe Band usually refers to The Scots College Pipes and Drums of Sydney, Australia. The College was founded in 1893, and Scottish music has been part of school life from its earliest years, although the formal pipe band tradition developed more fully later. The band became one of the school’s most recognisable symbols, combining piping, drumming, cadet tradition and Scottish heritage.

A major mark of recognition came in 1931, when Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother granted The Scots College Pipes and Drums and Cadet Corps permission to wear the Black Watch tartan, acknowledging the school’s Scottish links and ceremonial tradition. The band has grown into one of Australia’s best-known school pipe bands, with large student participation and regular performances at school, civic and commemorative events.

The Scots College Pipes and Drums has also performed internationally, including appearances connected with the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. In 2023, The Scots College Old Boys Pipes and Drums made its first official international appearance at the Tattoo, continuing the wider Scots College piping tradition. A proper school piping institution then: blazers, Black Watch tartan, cadets, drums, and enough skirl to make assembly impossible to ignore.
