About the Band
South African Irish Regiment Pipes & Drums is based in Johannesburg and is linked to the South African Irish Regiment, a unit originally raised in September 1914 by South Africans of Irish descent. The pipe band tradition is most clearly recorded from 1939, when the regiment was re-formed for the Second World War and a pipe band was raised.
After the war, the band continued as the South African Irish Regimental Association Pipe Band and became a distinctive part of South Africa’s military piping tradition. It has performed at military parades, memorial events, civilian shows and tattoos, helping preserve Irish identity within a South African setting.
Today, South African Irish Regiment Pipes & Drums remains active in performance and competition, representing both regimental heritage and Irish musical culture in South Africa. Its history combines military service, remembrance and pipe band tradition stretching back to the Second World War era.
